Salwa – A small school with a big heart
Salwa School is a small, growing school with the greatest of aspirations for its students and staff. Residing in a quiet, leafy residential area of Mamoura, the first thing that strikes you about Salwa is its positive, vibrant and welcoming atmosphere. Salwa is a happy and purposeful school that seeks to offer students with an increasingly diverse array of learning opportunities.
Situated in four attractive buildings (“blocks”), our school is organised into administrative, primary and secondary sections with girls and boys in separate classrooms and areas from Year 6 upwards. Our school boasts two science laboratories, two well-stocked libraries, two computer labs, WiFi throughout the school, cutting-edge interactive smart screens or the latest promethium interactive projectors in every teaching room, and ample outside shaded play and recreation areas.
We offer a ‘blended curriculum’ comprised of elements of the National Curriculum for England (NCfE), the Cambridge International curriculum, and the Qatar National curriculum for students aged 5 – 14 years (Year 1 – 9). Salwa School provides a balanced and broadly-based curriculum that promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of our students in line with Doha Academy’s Vision and Mission. Our aim is to provide an education for life, helping to prepare students for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
In addition to the academic curriculum, comprising twelve subject disciplines, our school curriculum is enhanced via a number of co-curriculum activities including after-school clubs which further broaden the learning opportunities for students.
Our school has elected to use the NCfE and Cambridge curriculum because of the alignment of values and aspirations for students with our overarching objectives. We flesh-out these curriculum frameworks with contextualised, meaningful and relevant tasks for our students. In line with the NCfE, at Salwa we:
- Have high expectations for all students, and set deliberately ambitious targets
- Provide stretching work for those students who attain significantly above the expected standard
- Understand the even greater obligation to plan lessons for students with low levels of prior attainment
- Provide equitable opportunities for all
- Seek to remove any identified barriers to learning
- Adopt a quality-first teaching and inclusion model, recognising the different needs of students
- Provide additional academic, social and emotional support if required
- Understand the needs of English as second language speakers
- Provide support for Arabic second language speakers
As per the NCFE, at Salwa School we recognise the importance of the core disciplines of Language & Literacy and Mathematics & Numeracy. With the exception of the Qatar National curriculum subjects (Arabic, Qatar History and Religion), English is the main medium of instruction. We understand the importance of linguistic skills across all subjects to acquire knowledge, enquire, and express understanding. Our two libraries have been recently enhanced to further encourage reading in school, and we provide an online library and various e-reading resources to support reading at home. We also expect teachers to use every relevant subject to develop students’ mathematical fluency. We recognise the importance of mathematical application to problem-solve, better understand how society is organised and how probability links to calculated risk-taking for example.
